Period 1 – Keyboarding
Course Description – 6th Grade
Keyboarding is a semester course designed to help students learn the touch operation of keyboard characters. Emphasis is placed on the following: mastery of the keyboard with desirable keyboarding technique, development of speed and accuracy, and the ability to create basic word processing documents.
Essential Question: Why is your posture important as you keyboard?
Answer: It is necessary to help prevent physical fatigue and the injuries that result from repetitive movements.
Learning Outcomes:
- Students follow the posture guidelines
- Demonstrate proper touch technique for home row letters
- Eyes on handout while practicing; not on their fingers
What are the posture rules?
- Move the keyboard to the edge of the table
- Hand’s width between you and the keyboard
- Sit up straight in your chair
- Feet flat on the floor
- Bend at the knuckles
- Elbows close to your sides
- Wrists straight; NEVER touching the table
- Gently press straight down on the key
Where should I place my fingers

Left hand: pinky finger on “a” ring finger on “s” middle finger on “d” index finger on “f”
Right hand: index finger on “j” middle finger on “k” ring finger on “l” pinky finger on “;” semicolon
Use the side of your right thumb to press the space bar. The other thumb just hangs around.
