Period 1 – Keyboarding

Course Description –  6th Grade

Keyboarding is a semester course designed to help students learn the touch operation of keyboard characters. Emphasis is placed on the following:  mastery of the keyboard with desirable keyboarding technique, development of speed and accuracy, and the ability to create basic word processing documents.

 

Essential Question:    Why is your posture important as you keyboard?

Answer:   It is necessary to help prevent physical fatigue and the injuries that result from repetitive movements.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Students follow the posture guidelines
  • Demonstrate proper touch technique for home row letters
  • Eyes on handout while practicing; not on their fingers

 

What are the posture rules?

  1. Move the keyboard to the edge of the table
  2. Hand’s width between you and the keyboard
  3. Sit up straight in your chair
  4. Feet flat on the floor
  5. Bend at the knuckles
  6. Elbows close to your sides
  7. Wrists straight; NEVER touching the table
  8. Gently press straight down on the key

Where should I place my fingers

Left hand:      pinky finger on “a”     ring finger on “s”     middle finger on “d”     index finger on “f”

Right hand:   index finger on “j”       middle finger on “k”     ring finger on “l”     pinky finger on “;”    semicolon

Use the side of your right thumb to  press the space bar.   The other thumb just hangs around.
