Getting Back on Track with Facts

As the 2021 – 2022 school year is underway, I just wanted to remind you that the students are expected to know the basic facts in each grade level.  First grade is working on addition facts and is expected to master all 100 addition facts before the end of the school year.

In second grade, the students will work on addition facts for the first couple of months and then move on to subtraction facts.  They are expected to master all 100 subtraction facts before the end of the school year.  The third graders will do addition and subtraction facts for the first several months and then move on to multiplication facts which they will need to master before the end of this school year.

That brings us to the fourth graders who will do addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts through December and then begin division facts in January.  They are expected to master the 100 division facts before the end of the school year.  The fifth grade students will do multiplication until the beginning of November and then begin division facts.  They are expected to master the division facts before April, which is when they will begin the 100 mixed facts.  Students are expected to master the 100 mixed facts before the end of the school year.

Knowing and readily recalling math facts is very important.  The computation part of math will be much easier and faster if a student can readily recall the basic facts rather than counting on with fingers or drawing a picture.  The more fluent a child is with the basic facts, the easier new concepts may be for him/her.  Please help your child study the basic facts in the math operation(s) expected for his/her grade level.  If you need flash cards, just let me know and I will send some home with your child.  Let’s help our children be a success in math by mastering the basic facts.
