Guided Reading

Guided reading happens daily in every classroom at Fannett-Metal Elementary School.  The reading specialists work with groups of students in each grade level.  The amount of time with each class varies  from 30 minutes to one hour based on schedules.

During Guided Reading, in most classrooms, there are 3-4 groups of students placed by their assessments. The groups rotate every 15 minutes (some may have longer time with a Reading Specialist).

The classroom teacher has a group that reads a small book together working on vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

The Reading Specialist works with a group of students during the guided reading time for one of the rotations.  The Reading Specialist works with the lowest students which are often Title I students.  The Reading Specialist often uses a component of the reading series, known as the Write-In Reader, during this time.

The other students have assigned tasks, such as independent reading, computer programs, worksheets, etc.  The exception is Kindergarten and First Grade, which has a classroom aide working on phonics, word families, sight words, or whatever skills would benefit them.
