Manipulatives Help Make The Connection

As we work with larger numbers in first grade, manipulatives help to make the connections when adding and subtracting. We  build the numbers using base ten blocks, draw a model, and then add or subtract to solve the problem.  We were adding multiples of ten which became an easy task when we went from the concrete models to the abstract worksheet. The students had no problems setting up the addends and then combining them to find the sum.  We then did subtraction by setting up the problem and taking tens away to find the difference.  Manipulatives help the students to make the connections needed when working with larger numbers.  Math can be fun as we master the concepts using larger numbers.
